Track spotlights are one of the most flexible lighting solutions there is: several spots run along a single track, can be freely repositioned, aimed and expanded at any time. That is exactly why you find them above the kitchen island as well as in the retail shop.
Before buying, however, almost the same question always comes up: single-circuit or three-circuit system? This article explains the difference in plain terms, shows what each system is intended for and what you should look out for when choosing.
What exactly is a track system?
A track system consists of a permanently mounted track and individual spots that are inserted into this track. The current flows through the track – a single connection thus supplies all the luminaires.
The big advantage: the spots are not permanently wired. They can be moved, turned and swivelled along the track. If the furnishings are rearranged or more light is needed, you simply add more spots – without laying new cables.
Typical components of a system are:
- the track (usually 1 or 2 metres, can be shortened and coupled)
- connectors (straight centre connectors or L-connectors for corners)
- a power feed that connects the track to the mains
- an end cap as a finish
- the spots themselves
Single-circuit track: simple, affordable, for the home
With a single-circuit track there is one single circuit on the track. This means: all spots on this track are switched on and off together and – provided the luminaires are dimmable – dimmed together.
For most living spaces that is exactly enough. Above the dining table, in the kitchen or in the hallway you usually want to operate all the spots together anyway.
Advantages:
- cheaper to buy
- easy installation
- perfectly sufficient when one lighting group is enough
Limitation: you cannot switch the spots separately in groups. Anyone who wants one part of the track bright and the other dimmed reaches a limit here.

Three-circuit track: control several groups independently
A three-circuit track contains – as the name says – three separate circuits in a single track. Each spot is assigned to one of these three circuits when it is inserted.
This means up to three spot groups on the same track can be switched or dimmed independently of one another. Example in a retail shop: circuit 1 lights the shelves, circuit 2 the shop window area, circuit 3 the checkout zone – each group as required.
Advantages:
- up to three separately switchable lighting groups
- ideal for large areas and changing use
- the standard in shopfitting, galleries, offices and hospitality
To bear in mind: the system is somewhat more expensive, and the separate switching needs to be planned during the electrical installation. For a single living room it is usually more than would be necessary.

Rule of thumb: if one jointly switched lighting group is enough, the single-circuit track is the right and cheaper choice. If areas are to be controlled independently of one another, there is no way around the three-circuit system.
What makes a good track spotlight?
The system decides the switching – the spot decides the lighting effect. When choosing the spot, look out for:
Power and brightness
It is not the wattage alone that counts, but the luminous flux in lumens. For accents on individual objects, compact spots are sufficient; large areas and high ceilings demand more power.
Beam angle
A narrow angle concentrates the light and sets targeted accents on merchandise, pictures or a counter. A wide angle provides more area-wide general lighting. For track systems this is often more important than wattage alone.
Light colour
Warm white (around 3000 K) feels cosy, neutral white (around 4000 K) matter-of-fact, daylight white (around 6500 K) particularly cool. Many Braytron spots offer all three light colours in one device with the 3-in-1 function (3CCT), switchable directly on the spot.
Swivel capability
Good spots can be turned and tilted. This lets you aim the light exactly where it is needed – and realign it after a rearrangement.
And the magnetic 48-volt systems?
Alongside the classic 230-volt tracks there are modern magnetic track systems with 48 volts. Here the luminaires hold magnetically in the track and can be repositioned completely without tools. In addition to spots, there are linear and pendant modules for a continuous light line.
The difference: 48-volt systems work with low voltage and require a suitable power supply. They are especially flexible and visually very reduced – but more elaborate to purchase. For purist new builds and design-oriented projects, they are an interesting alternative to the classic track.
Before buying: the short checklist
- Is one shared lighting group enough (single-circuit) or do I need separate areas (three-circuit)?
- How long does the track need to be – and do I need corners (L-connectors)?
- How many spots should go on the track, and what power is needed?
- Narrow accent or wide general lighting – which beam angle suits?
- Which light colour – or rather switchable via 3-in-1?
- Do all components (track, connectors, power feed, spots) match the same system?
The last point in particular is decisive: single-circuit and three-circuit components are not interchangeable with one another. Make sure to choose all parts from the same system.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put a three-circuit spot into a single-circuit track?
No. The adapters and contacts of the two systems are not compatible. Track, connectors and spot must always belong to the same system.
Are track spotlights dimmable?
That depends on the particular spot and the installation. Dimmable does not automatically mean that every dimmer fits – lamp, driver and dimmer must match. Check the product specifications before buying.
How many spots fit on one track?
This depends on the length of the track and the permissible total load. As a rough guide: better to distribute several smaller spots evenly than a few very powerful ones. For larger installations the maximum load capacity of the track should be observed.
Can I extend a track system later on?
Yes – that is one of the biggest advantages. As long as you stick to the same system, tracks can be coupled and further spots added at any time.
